Best Campground Yet!

Day 13, April 14, 2011, Best Campsite Yet!

Route from Del Rio to Cooksey RV Park, Camp Wood, TX

84.1 miles 13.7 mph

Best Moment – The best moment was crossing the bridge over the Nueces River and seeing Ruby parked among the giant moss covered oaks, at the river’s edge at the Cooksey RV Park.  This has got to be one of the best campsites ever!  It is certainly the best of our trip so far.  We have a paved, not dirt patio, a picnic table a grassy front yard and we’re right on the river.  Five Stars certainly for the location!!  It is hard to believe that this is a county park.

Worst Moment – If there had to be a worst moment on this great day, it was looking down and seeing the temperature had climbed to 104.  Hey, I knew it would get hot and humid, but this is still April. Or, the worst moment could have been putting the tie downs and cover for Ruby in the compartment that Neita can’t open.  I got a call from her about 15 miles into the ride asking where they were and I knew that there was a reason that I meant to help her get everything ready to roll.  She got someone else from the park to help her and I’ve tried adjusting the locking mechanism.

Today was a great ride.  Nice rolling countryside. The route from Del Rio to here is gradually uphill, but it was hard to tell.  Tomorrow is a bit more rigorous, but still nothing like the first couple of days.

I rode past Laughlin AFB.  It is pretty amazing to see the jets come in for a landing and take off right over your head and boy are they loud.  Really loud when they are right overhead and you have nothing over your head, save a bicycle helmet.  I saw lots of beautiful Texas ranches and hunting preserves.  (There are several that are for sale if anyone is interested.) Also saw some really beautiful deer and the first antelope.  One of the roads that I was on for nearly 30 miles was so desolate that I doubt that I saw more than ten vehicles and one of them was Ruby.

Although the countryside seems extremely dry, there are still lots of roadside wildflowers and the palo verde trees are in beautiful full yellow bloom.

There is something so peacefully tranquil about sitting on our patio, watching the river, and listening to the birds.  We’re contemplating staying here a week – not really though it would be a great place to do that.

  1. Hey Bill,
It's great reading your blog. I'm so glad you and Neita are able to do this. I like your best and worst moment posts.

Hopefully, no more flat tires for awhile.

    Take care,
    Paula
