Last Night in Florida

Day 50, May 21, 2011, Last Night in Florida

68.8 miles, averaging 14.7 mph

Route from Port Orange to North Beach Camp Resort, St. Augustine, FL

Best Moment – The sunset was another all time great one!

Worst Moment – The love bugs hitting me in the on the mouth was pretty gross and there were swarms of these guys.  At one point I looked at my white jersey and must have had two dozen on my shirt alone.  Amazingly, Neita didn’t run into any.

The route today from Port Orange through Daytona Beach, Ormond Beach, Flagler Beach, Beverly Beach and all of the way to St. Augustine Beach was mostly on the coast.  Again there were lots of beautiful beaches, sand waves and sun.  Surprisingly, they were not very crowded considering it was a glorious Saturday.  Someone said that Daytona Beach was the most beautiful.  It would be difficult to know that for certain because there were so many beautiful ones.

And, there were city parks with complete facilities.  Within the first few miles of the ride, I saw my first and they were frequent and had all of the necessary stuff – water, restrooms and picnic tables.  Yeah!!

Part of the route was on a dedicated bicycle path.  What a glorious ride through the Spanish moss draped tree tunnels. Overall it was a great day to ride!

I got to the camp resort around 1:30 and Neita and I headed for the beach.  It is mesmerizing to watch the waves roll in and listen to the surf.  I had quite a nap in the sand.

After taking care of some bicycle maintenance, we decided to follow the folks in the office about the oceanfront, restaurant right across the street from the campground and eat dinner there.  A really beautiful view.  The food was okay too.

Wow Day 50 and last day in Florida.  We’ve been in Florida for nearly a month and cycled nearly 1600 miles in the state. What a state.  While, both Neita and I are ready to move on, we’re glad that we got to visit here.  The overall total is 3,770 miles.
